Military Tribunals, We Need Them Now!

I am writing this on Memorial Day, 2015.  This is a day when all of us Americans should take pause to remember those who have bravely fought for our freedom.  Some of these brave individuals paid the ultimate sacrifice.  I am not old enough to know anyone personally that lost their lives during WWII or Korea.  My father and uncle, both WWII veterans, would reminisce about some of their lost classmates.  My memories are of the young men I knew from ROTC that were killed during the Vietnam War.  Young men, all educated, some with families, who will never experience the joy of being a grandfather or the aches and pains of getting older.  I think of them often.

Recently, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was found guilty and received the death sentence.  You don’t remember Dzhokhar?  You would easily recognize him as the Boston bomber.  He and his brother set off two bombs at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, thereby assuring maximum carnage.  In that regard, they succeeded.  While friends and families were cheering for the runners at the finish line, their bomb killed three people and injured 264 more.  Many of the surviving injured have two prosthetic limbs.  One of the killed was an 8 year old boy.

After a lengthy and costly civil trial, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was appropriately given a death sentence.  What I find absolutely appalling is that it has been determined that this sentence may not be carried out for at least 10 years because of the appeal process.  Appeal process?  On what grounds?  Are the three murdered victims going to miraculously reappear on planet Earth?  Are the 264 victims going to be miraculously healed?  I am pretty sure neither of these events will occur.  What new information could possibly be presented by the defense to change the sentence?  ‘Your honor, my client is not guilty because he was in Iran attending a bomb-making seminar at the time of the explosions in Boston.’  Why is this terrorist and blatant murderer allowed to live more than 60 days, at government expense, after receiving a unanimous death penalty?  Do you know why?  Well, Mr Tsarnaev became a naturalized citizen of the United States of America on ………..ready for this…… on September 11, 2012!  Yup.  On the anniversary of 9/11.  How befitting.

We need to rethink as to how we should treat these terrorists.  That applies to the foreign bred and the home-grown variety.  But wait!  There is a procedure that has been used from the infancy of the United States, and reconfigured in 2001 to address just this situation.  It is called the military tribunal.

On November 13, 2001, President George W. Bush issued a new military order in the war against terrorism.  The order called for the secretary of defense to detain non-citizens accused of international terrorism.  The order includes all organizations that have engaged in, aided, or conspired to commit international terrorist acts against the United States of America or its citizens.  Those who knowingly harbor such individuals are also subject to the order.  Under the order, the secretary is charged with establishing military tribunals (also called military commissions) to conduct trials of non-citizens accused of terrorism either in the US or in other parts of the world.

A military tribunal, or commission, is different from a regular civilian criminal court.  In a tribunal, military officers act as both judge and jury.  After a hearing, guilt is determined by a vote of the commissioners.  Unlike a criminal jury, the decision does not have to be unanimous.  The order requires a ‘full and fair trial.’

On March 21, 2002, the Department of Defense issued its procedures for the commissions.  The commission would consist of three to seven members appointed by the secretary of defense or by an appointed committee.  All members would be officers in the US military.  A presiding officer would be chosen and must be a military lawyer.  The presiding officer will have authority to admit or exclude evidence.  The officer may conduct the trial in closed session if this is necessary to protect classified information or to assure the safety of defendants, witnesses, or commission members.

Under the procedures, a defendant would receive many, but not all, of the due process protections guaranteed to a defendant in a US civilian criminal court.   The tribunal procedures guarantee the following due process protections:

1.  An accused will be provided with defense counsel and can also have a lawyer of his or her own choosing, either a military or civilian attorney.

2.  The accused will be presumed innocent until proven guilty.  The prosecution must prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

3.  An accused may refuse to testify during trial.  The accused will have the right to obtain witnesses and documents necessary for the defense.

4.  A person accused may not be tried twice before a military commission for the same offense.

5.  An accused will be allowed to negotiate and enter into a plea agreement.

Under the procedures, however, a person can be convicted in a commission trial by a two-thirds majority of the commissioners.  Unanimous verdicts are not required.  Evidence, including previous trial testimony and written statements will be admissible if it tends to prove or disprove the case at hand. The exclusionary rule, which keeps illegally seized evidence out of a civilian criminal trial, does not apply.  The procedures do not provide for appeals from a guilty verdict to civilian judges.  They do, however, call for ‘reviews’ of a verdict by a three-member panel selected by the secretary of defense.  No verdict will be final until approved by the POTUS or the secretary of defense.

The first time a military tribunal was used was when a commission was empaneled by George Washington to try Major John Andre, a British officer, for the crime of spying.  Andre was the ‘go-between’  guy between the British and Benedict Arnold.  Andre was hanged.

During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed that all rebels arrested with the United States would be subject to martial law.  Military commissions tried an estimated 4,000 people.  There were eight abettors arrested after the assassination of President Lincoln.  All were found guilty by military tribunal.  Four were hanged and the other four received lengthy sentences.

President Roosevelt authorized a military tribunal in 1942, when eight Nazi saboteurs were delivered to Long Island by U-boat.  They were dressed as civilians and were to target American industry.  Two of the eight defected and contacted the FBI.  The two defectors received prison sentences.  The six remaining saboteurs were electrocuted.

Most people have heard of the Nuremburg trials in Germany at the end of WWII.  This military commission was to try the Nazis for war crimes.  A lesser known, but just as effective military tribunal took place in the Philippines at the end of WWII to try for Japanese war crimes.  Both tribunals resulted in death sentences for the guilty.

Another big difference between a military tribunal and a civilian military court?  In a military tribunal  court, the sentences are carried out in a timely manner.  Don’t you think Tsarnaev should have been before a military tribunal?

But Grandpa T.  You can’t do that.  After all, Tsarnaev is an American citizen.

Let’s discuss that further.  Some months ago, the head of the FBI appeared on 60 minutes.  He was there to discuss terrorism.  He was asked a very direct question, “Do you know how many Americans are fighting for terroristic groups?”  His answer?  “We know all the Americans that are fighting for terroristic groups and we think there are about a dozen of them.”  If this was not so blatantly stupid, I would have laughed.  Here is why.  There are almost 100,000 Somalis living in Minnesota.  Not that long ago, there was an article saying that over 200 Somali teenagers were currently unaccounted for in Minnesota.   Well, I don’t know where all of them have gone, but I can tell you that many of them are now associated with terrorist groups that are enemies of the US.  Security agencies have apprehended many of these teenagers/young adults during their travel.  But they haven’t caught all of them, as two high school classmates and friends were both recently killed while fighting for ISIS.  Somali girls have fled to marry terrorist members.  These Somalis are being actively recruited because they speak English and know America and American ways.  Many of these Somalis were born in the US!

Now follow me during my ‘leap of logic.’  If an individual joins/supports and organization that is an enemy of the United States, didn’t that individual just declare war on the United States?    I wholeheartedly believe that is exactly what they did.  And as such, I do not believe they should be granted the liberties and rights associated with being an American citizen and its judicial system.  As far as I am concerned, Tsarnaev should have been tried by military tribunal, with a sentence to be carried out in a timely manner.  I believe anyone we capture fighting/supporting a terroristic organization is denied the privileges provided American citizens. And… this is a big and… did you notice the highlighted line in the military tribunal procedures stating that not only the terrorist is subject to military tribunal, but those who knowingly harbor such individuals.  Do you really think that Tsarnaev’s parents did not know what the brothers were going to do?  Do you really believe that the parents of the missing Somali teenagers don’t know what they are doing or where they are?

I’m pissed!  This country is the land of opportunity and privilege.  Yet, we get these people who use our liberalism against us, becoming US citizens and then murdering their fellow Americans.  Tsarnaev should be hanged.  Becoming a US citizen and then setting off bombs 6 months later was not a part of his naturalization process.  His ranting parents and the parents of Somali teens fighting against the US should be deported back to the third world crap holes from which they came.

Wake up America!  I hope you enjoyed your Memorial Day.

Islamic Extremism, Oh My!

Our government is tripping all over itself not wanting to attribute ‘violent extremism’ to the Islamic religion.

In a meeting on Friday, January 23, 2015, held in Davos, Switzerland, our Secretary of State, John Kerry spoke in front of a group of our allies at a World Economics Forum.  In his speech, he said that extremists who are killing children and others in Iraq, Syria, Nigeria and other parts of the world may cite Islam as a justification, but the West should be careful about calling them Islamic radicals. He went on to say that it would be a mistake to link Islam to criminal conduct rooted in alienation, poverty, thrill-seeking and other factors.

Kerry also said, “We have to keep our heads.  The biggest error we could make would be to blame Muslims for crimes…that their faith utterly rejects.  We will certainly not defeat our foes by vilifying potential partners.  We may very well fuel the very fires that we want to put out.”

These comments irritated our allies from France and England, as our administration has yet to use the term, ‘Islamic extremism.’    The British Foreign Secretary, Philip Hammond, stood next to Kerry and urged the defeat of what he called “the scourge of violent Islamist extremism.”

Hurray for our allies!  At least, they have the guts to place the blame where it rightly belongs.   So why does our government do the ‘two-step’ shuffle to assure the three words ‘violent Islamic extremist’ never appear in the same sentence.  Could there be an unknown Islamic influence in our highest government?

Just look at what has happened recently.  There was the shooting, in Paris, of magazine employees and Jewish customers in a deli.  The people that carried out those attacks were Muslim.  There happened the beheading of at least one Japanese citizen, which was broadcast on the internet by, right again, Muslims.  There are atrocities of dynamic proportions taking place in Africa.  These include murder, rape, and selling women into slavery.  This, too, is being done by Muslims. All of the past bombings of US embassies and of the World Trade Center were done by Muslims.  The Boston Marathon bombing and the carnage caused at Ft. Hood were all carried out by Muslims.

These events are just the tip of a very deep iceberg, and yet our government, in light of all these events, is incapable of blaming the ‘violent Islamic extremists.’

I have researched until I am blue in the face and I cannot put one of these events onto the shoulders of any mournful Methodist, bible totin’ Baptist, or a perturbed Presbyterian.  There is not even a Hindu, Mormon, Catholic, or Jew in the bunch.  Nope.  Try as I may, they are all being done by Muslims!  And only Muslims!  All of these atrocious events are being done by members of the second largest, fastest growing religion in the world!

I believe much of this ‘Islamic-led’ violence is for money.  You don’t kidnap a village full of women and sell them into slavery because there wasn’t a good soccer game on the TV.  You don’t run amok and conquer oil fields for the sake of admiring a landscape full of oil derricks and sand..  ISIL has been pumping that oil and selling it for……money!  So, admittedly, there are many of these events taking place for greed.  Lets face it, some of these people that are being recruited into these land-grabbing, oil well-thieving, slavery-selling ventures are being paid quite well for their efforts.  Probably much more than they can get paid in a democratic, capitalistic society.

Then you have the zealots.  These are the ‘Mohamed inspired’ nut jobs that are the suicide bombers.  (Even though we have now learned that Saddam Hussein was paying money for suicide bombers to bomb Israel.)  These are the people that follow Sharia Law to the ultimate degree.  Kill anyone who does not believe in Mohamed!  Kill anyone who leaves the Muslim religion!   All religions other than the believers of Mohamed are infidels and deserve to die!  If you don’t know about Sharia Law, I cannot advise strongly enough for you to acquaint yourself with the tenants of Sharia Law.  (I published a blog called, What Flavor of Islam Do You Like, in September, 2014.  You will want to read it.)  When you combine the Islamic zealotry with the Islamic ‘money mongers’, it produces a combustible mixture of Islamic-inspired extremism.

So why are there so many of these people flocking to ISIL, Al Qaeda, Boko Harem and similar organizations?

Have you ever used Wikipedia?  Did you know there is a WikiIslam?  It is a website full of information targeted to the peoples of the Islamic religion, just as we Americans use Wikipedia.

John Kerry may have hit upon something when he said that the criminal conduct of these misguided Muslims was because of ‘alienation, poverty and thrill seeking.’  Because, as a major religion, the adherents of the Islamic religion are the most illiterate in the world.

Need proof?

According to WikiIslam, the whole Arab world of almost 1.5 billion people translates about three hundred books annually.  The country of Greece translates fives times that number alone.  The 10,000 books translated into Spanish every year exceeds the total number of books translated into Arabic over the last millennium!   The Arab world’s total investment in research and development is less than one seventh of the world average.  Fifty-seven Muslim majority (all members of the OIC, Organization of Islamic Conference) countries have an average of ten universities each for a total of less that 600 universities for 1.5 billion people. The country of India has 8,400 universities.  The United States has 5,758 universities.  Six out of ten Muslims cannot read!  In Christendom, the adult literacy rate stands at 78 percent.  Nearly half of all Arab women are illiterate.  There were no statistics available for how much “brainwashing homeschooling” that goes on over there.

Here are some disturbing statistics from specific countries.

Denmark – Two thirds of all immigrant school children with Arabic backgrounds are illiterate after ten years in the Danish school system.  Muslims make up 5% of the population but receive 40% of social-welfare outlays.

Nigeria – Illiteracy among Nigerian women of child-bearing age is three times as high among Muslims (71.9%) as among non-Muslims (23.9%).  Two-thirds of Nigerian Muslim women lack any formal education.

How about our Islamic progressive ally, Saudi Arabia – Saudi Arabia did not have a high school until after 1930.  Its first girls’ school was established after 1950.  The Saudis have only 250 public libraries to serve a population of 26 million.  The Saudis spend millions to translate the Quran into other languages, without a similar effort for foreign books.  The youth unemployment rate in 2009 was over 30%!

Tajikistan – Official figures show there are more mosques than schools in this country.  There are 3,425 regular mosques, 344 cathedral mosques, and 40 central cathedral mosques.  There are 3,793 overcrowded schools, with up to 40 students per classroom.

United Kingdom – In 2004, one-third of Muslims of working age in Great Britain had no qualifications, the highest proportion for any religious group!  They were the least likely to have degrees or equivalent education.  Thirty-five percent of all Muslim children are growing up in a household where no adult is in employment, compared with 17.6% of all dependent children.

Yemen – A shocking 65% of married Yemeni women, age 15 to 24, are illiterate.

The Middle East has the highest rate of unemployment in the world.  It is habitually over 10% compared to 6% for the world.  Three-quarters of Arab youth want to migrate to countries out of their region, due to rising unemployment in Arab states.  Unemployment among the youth group in Arab countries is over 26%!  It is typically over 40% for people under 25 years old.

These facts and statistics can all be found on WikiIslam.  (Hopefully, Homeland Security does not find me by knocking on my door for using the site!)  I could go on and on, but you certainly have been able to connect the dots.  The lack of education prevalent throughout the Islamic culture results in many, many disaffected youths.  These people want to leave the Islamic, especially the Mideast, countries for better opportunities.  Unfortunately, they are uneducated and unqualified to hold anything other than a menial job – if they can even get that.  They will then take advantage of the social-welfare programs or possibly become terrorists, or both.  Think about this.  With that background, what would their other options really be?

In November, 2011, the Arab League held a conference in Qatar for member-countries.  Khalid Al Wahishi, director of Population Policy and Immigration at Arab League, said the following:  “We at Arab League have been warning member states at all our meetings to empower the youth.  Unemployment, alarmingly high at 26%, poor participation of youth, and illiteracy are major hindrances to population policy development and implementation.”

I could not agree more.  So what has been done since then?  Well, since you are attempting to reconfigure the mindset of people who have been indoctrinated by a centuries old religion, you can imagine what corrective measures have taken place.  Not many, if any.  This would require the 1% ‘haves’ to spend some of their massive wealth on the ‘have nots.’  They would have to purchase one less Rolls Royce or solid silver Mercedes to build a school or two, and that is not likely to occur.  The ‘haves’ don’t want to share.  And, as long as the Islamic terrorist groups do not directly attack them, they are rather indifferent about the terrorist group.

The only changes that have occurred is that there are more and larger ‘Islamic extremist organizations,’ and there are employment opportunities galore for unemployed and uneducated Islamic youths.   Luckily for the extremist organizations, they have a large uneducated, unemployed labor pool from which to garner employees.

Connect the dots.  The oligarchys that are governing these Muslim countries in the name of Islam need to make a more concerted effort to educate their populace and provide greater opportunities to the young people.  Otherwise, the Western civiilizations will be facing Islamic extremists for a long, long time.

The murder, rape, slavery, and extortion business is profitable, and it appears that business has been booming.

The Fable of the Tortoise and the U.S.

I am amazed at how quickly some issues can be resolved, seemingly faster than the Starship Enterprise at warp 9.  Alternately, I am also amazed at how slowly some issues get resolved.  These issues move more slowly than a centipede in maple syrup.

As I am writing this, there is all kinds of terroristic turmoil taking place in Paris.  As you are likely aware, there was a very well planned attack executed on a French magazine.  Their crime?  They (the press) had the audacity to exercise free speech and to make cartoons that satirized the Islamic religion.  (This is very similar to the Danish cartoonist that is still under 24/7 security protection for cartoons he drew ten years ago!  This was discussed in a previous blog.)   Three shooters entered the magazine publishing offices and killed a dozen innocent people.  They obviously had training, as they were quick and precise in their attack.  The hub-bub on TV now was that two of the attackers had taken hostages in one location, while one of their sympathetic friends took hostages at another location:  a Jewish deli.  Two hostage situations at the same time within 24 hours after the initial attack on the magazine.  What a nightmare for French security forces!  Ultimately, the three gunmen were killed, but sadly, hostages at the Jewish deli were also killed.

The point is this, the French security apparatus moved quickly and decisively in handling these situations.  Although innocent lives were unfortunately lost during the assault, the rapid security efforts should be commended as both decisive and timely.

Need an example of a slow response situation for comparison?  Remember Benghazi?  Oh yes, we all suffer from short term memory on occasion.  On this occasion the American ambassador in Libya came under attack.  The compound that he was occupying was attacked by a group that was a little too organized to be a random crowd of displeased Libyans.  This was the initial report from Washington.  The attack took place because disaffected Muslims were upset about some movie.  Yeah, right.  Another DC cover-up.  Unfortunately, this was a very feeble attempt at a cover-up.  The real story is that this attack, which took place on September 11, was conducted by a militia that was originally organized to combat Gaddafi.  The Ambassador to Libya, another embassy employee and two former special forces personnel were killed during this attack.  The U.S. response to the attack?  There wasn’t a response.  No attempt was made by our government to save our citizens in Libya.  Rumor has it that the military had a reaction force and airstrike on the way, but were called back at the insistence of then Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton.

A quick French security action versus a slow, non-action on the part of the United States.  Who would have thought that?

Need another example?  Recently, the computers were hacked at Sony.  This hacking allegedly took place because Sony was going to release a movie entitled The Interview.  The plot of this movie included the assassination of the North Korean dictator, Kim Jong-Un.  Consequently, some group calling itself the Guardians of Peace hacked personal information of various actors and actresses and intercompany messages with the warning that the movie should not be released.  Supposedly, over 100 terabytes of information were stolen from Sony.  I have difficulty fathoming a terabyte, but it sounds like a boatload of information to the average person.

Anyway, when personal emails were released, that is when the proverbial defecation hit the ventilation.  Someone had the audacity to say that Angelina Jolie was a ‘spoiled brat’.   Other personal messages mocked the POTUS for being black, even though the ‘mockers’ were significant Democrat supporters.   But it was amusing to an outsider like me to see that no one was really concerned about the hacking of the Sony computers until the comments about Angela Jolie became public.

We have an example of two quick responses to a situation.  The first decisive and quick action was by the hackers.  They also displayed no small measure of technical expertise.  The second quick response was by the actors and actresses that came to the defense of Sony, in general, and Angelina Jolie, specifically.  If there was a red ICBM fire command button located in Hollywood with the missiles aimed at North Korea, someone would have pushed it!  Some of the idiotic comments that came from Hollywood celebrities concerning this event were priceless.  The media took great efforts to suppress the stupidity.  It was indeed entertaining.

Another example of slow?  Do you recognize the names of Nadal Hassan and Dzhokhar Tamerlan?  I know you would instantly recognize them if I mentioned Fort Hood shooter and Boston bomber.  Yup.  These are them.  Nadal Hassan, an American citizen born in the US, killed 13 military personnel and wounded 30 others on November 5, 2009.  His court martial finally took place four years later, without much fanfare and little publicity.  As a matter of fact, I was unaware it had taken place.  He was found guilty on August 23, 2013, and sentenced to death on August 28, 2013.  It took almost four years to try this monster for killing thirteen people!

The jury is still out on Tamerlan, as it has not yet convened.  Tamerlan and his brother took the April 15, 2013, occasion of Patriot Day in Boston to set off a bomb filled with ball bearings inside a pressure cooker.  Three people were killed and 264 wounded.  Many of these wounded were injured seriously, as many of them lost one or two limbs.  So here we go again.  Two terroristic activities that should be cut and dried, but have taken forever and a day crawling their way through the judicial process.  Wouldn’t you think we would have passed laws after 9/11 that would have expedited the judicial process for terroristic acts?

Are we all tired of the gridlock in Washington, DC?  Time for a federal budget?  Time to address social welfare programs?  We were so tired of gridlock under the former congress that we voters gave the Republicans control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives in the last midterm election.   Last Tuesday, January 6, 2015,the new legislators were sworn into office.  Bill Maher, that great political pundit and part-time comedian, chided the new congress on Tuesday night for not having accomplished anything as of yet.  Now that would be fast!

But you do know who is speedier than a little bunny on steroids.  That would be our President, Barack Hussein Obama.  How fast is he?  He is so swift, that before one piece of legislation has been forwarded to him, he threatened on Wednesday, one day after the new congress was sworn in, to veto any legislation being proposed by the Republicans.  Now that is quick!  (Not to mention incredibly stupid!)  What are the principle issues causing the ‘veto’ threat?  The first is the proposal to proceed with the XL pipeline project.  As one senator pointed out, the XL pipeline proposal has been on the table longer than it took the United States to win World War II!  The second item of contention is the Affordable Care Act, aka, Obamacare.  It appears the Republicans want to repeal the law.  It only took a majority to pass the act, but it will take 2/3 to repeal it.  Even if the numbers are there, Obama has threatened a veto.  After all, his name has now been associated with the act.  There are other issues that will be proposed by the new congress, but rest assured, the POTUS will put jet fuel in the inkwell of his ‘veto pen’.

But wait – there’s more!  President Obama has not only placed the threat of vetoes on a fast track, he has also been on the fast track in issuing executive orders  since the midterm election.  Realizing that congress would be controlled by the Republicans, he loaded up his executive order pen with rocket fuel!  Do you know how many executive orders the POTUS has issued between the midterm elections and the three months before the new congress convenes?  Two?  Three?  No, our over-achieving, fast-moving POTUS managed to squeeze in six executive orders before the new congress convened.  Does illegal immigration and amnesty ring a bell?  Now that’s prompt – and efficient!

So, I have come to the conclusion that speed can be attained when necessary, and slow can be attained when convenient.  In the meantime, if you were hoping for the government to achieve results with compromise and eliminating gridlock, you may once again experience an example of stagnant, feet-dragging inefficiency.

‘Diversity Acceptance’ and Liberalism: The Downfall of America?

Our country was founded upon Judeo-Christian values.  People migrated to this country to escape religious persecution, to live free from government intervention and to live a free and independent existence.

Over the years, even during my lifetime, we have now embraced political correctness, ‘diversity acceptance’ and liberalism to such an extent that it could jeopardize the future of our great nation.  Let me explain.

Our first successful settlers in the US were the Pilgrims.  These people were basically ‘Puritan separatists,’ as they were being persecuted in Great Britain for not strictly following the teachings of the predominant Church of England.  So in 1620, after fleeing Great Britain and settling in Holland for about 10 years, the Pilgrims made their way from Holland to Plymouth, Massachusetts.

After the Pilgrims were the Puritans.  They were a group of English Protestants who wished to reform and purify the Church of England.  Puritans in England were threatened as England verged on civil war.   Though persecuted in England, they supported uniformity of religion.  This was the Puritan version of ‘my way, or the highway.’  Once in control in New England, they sought to break “the very neck of Schism and vile opinions.”  Puritans expelled dissenters from their colonies.  So much for religious tolerance!

One such expelled dissenter was Roger Williams.  Williams founded Rhode Island on the principle of religious freedom.

You can tell that the Puritans were not a very popular bunch, otherwise some sports team would surely be named after them.  But just when you thought religious intolerance could not get any worse, we were then introduced to the Quakers.  The Quakers were basically Puritans on zealot steroids!  They carried the Puritan beliefs to the extreme.  It could be said they were the first ‘religious extremists’ in America.  By 1685, as many as 8,000 Quakers had come to Pennsylvania from England, Wales, and Ireland.

Catholics settled in Maryland as a result of being driven out of England by Elizabeth I.   There were earlier Catholic missions established on the Pacific coast, but these proved to be unsuccessful.

Virginia was the largest, most populous and most important colony.  The Church of England was legally established in Virginia.  The bishop of London made it a favorite missionary target and sent 22 clergymen by 1624.  The American Revolution inflicted deeper wounds on the Church of England in America than any other denomination because the English monarch (thanks to Henry VIII) was the head of the church.  Church of England priests were required to swear their allegiance to the British crown.  The Church of England in Virginia was embraced by the gentry, ie, the landowners. The poorer farmers were represented by newer religions.  The Baptists presented a more democratic religion.  The Methodists were against slavery.  Thus, a person’s religion in Virginia was somewhat dependent on one’s social status.

As you can see, many of our first states were really established as ‘religious colonies.’

Now we get to the American Revolution and the writing of the Constitution.  The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution reads, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the exercise thereof…………”  Oddly enough, the phrase “separation of church and state,” does not appear in the Constitution.  It has been traced to an 1802 letter from Thomas Jefferson to a Baptist congregation.  It has since been quoted in several opinions handed down by the Supreme Court.

Other religions have been introduced and have prospered in the United States.  Jewish settlers migrated to the Eastern seaboard.  Mormonism was founded in New York and relocated to Utah.   There are a flood of other religions in the US too numerous to mention.  Suffice it to say, other than those fun-loving Puritans, religions have been established and tolerated and have coexisted relatively peacefully since our founding.

Do you think our country is a little liberal?  It was announced yesterday that the LGBT organization (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) is changing its name to ‘up the stakes,’ according to one spokesperson.  It will now be the LGBTQ organization.  The additional letter Q will now stand for queer.  I am not making this up.

Before I get LGBTQ hate mail, I want to clarify that I do not care if a person is LGBTQ.  What is occurring is that I am becoming rather irritated by the amount of liberal media coverage this organization/movement receives.  If you were to believe the media, you might accept that it is hip to be gay.   I am also beginning to believe that Grandma P and I are one of the few heterosexual couples in America!  Gay/lesbian actors and actresses get an insurmountable amount of publicity and empathy if they profess their ‘gaydom.’  They are brave.  They are passionate.  They should be revered for their honesty.  Less and less media coverage is spent on ‘traditional’ relationships.  Apparently Adam and Eve are not hip, but Adam and George are.  Go figure.

Did you watch the last NFL draft?  Besides Johnny Manziel, who got the most press coverage at the draft?  That would be Michael Sam, the openly gay defensive lineman from Missouri.  Sam was drafted in the seventh round with the 249th pick by the St. Louis Rams.  The media storm topped out as a category 5.  Then, after the circus came to St. Louis, Sam was cut and picked up by the Dallas Cowboys.  Sam then used the ‘d’ word in describing his situation.  He said he was discriminated against, and would not have been cut by St. Louis if he were not gay.  Reality sucks!  (Oops!)  Reality bites! (Oops!)  Oh the hell with it!  He is a mediocre player regardless of his sexual orientation.

As an aside, in high school I was in a play titled, ‘Our Hearts Were Young and Gay.’  Tell me that has not taken on a whole different connotation since the late 60s.

Have you seen some of the recent Victoria’s Secret TV ads?  When I was a teen, you only saw stuff like that in a magazine wrapped in a plain brown wrapper.  Now it is readily available for our children to see.

So why am I muddling through this abbreviated history lesson on religion?  Why the examples of our liberalized society?

We are facing a very threatening foe, and they are taking our political correctness, liberalism and ‘diversity acceptance’ and using it against our country.  That would be the Muslim religion, the fastest growing religion in the world.

In a previous blog, I outlined the tenants of Sharia law, so I will not repeat myself in this blog.  You would be wise to acquaint yourself with this law, as it is the law in 57 countries of the world.

This religion is not a religion of tolerance.  Need proof?

Do you know who Kurt Westergaard is?  Kurt is the cartoonist from Denmark that had the audacity to draw and publish a cartoon showing the prophet Mohammad wearing a bomb in a turban.  Did he get an award for his depicture?  No.  What he got was two murder attempts on his life.  The first was in 2008, when two Tunisians and one Moroccan-born Dane were planning to kill him.  In 2010, a Somali Muslim broke into his house and attempted to kill him with an axe.   The police arrived in time to shoot the assailant.  He has received hundreds of death threats.  The Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET) is tasked with protecting him 24/7.  All of this because of a cartoon!

So you are probably thinking that this was the work of a few demented Islamic terrorists.  Not so fast, buckaroo.  According to one expert on the religion, 20% of the Muslim religion are Muslim extremists and another 20% are moderate Muslims, leaving 60% of Muslim adherants somewhere in the middle.  But their middle is definitely different than our middle.  As a religion of over one billion, that equates to 200 million extremists.   After the incident with the cartoon of Muhammad, 78% of all Muslims residing in Great Britain thought that Kurt Westergaard should be punished for his cartoon.  Let me be perfectly clear about this……….their form of punishment is not a rap on the knuckles using a ruler by a prune-faced, elderly nun.  There is no spanking.  He will not be made to copy a page from a dictionary for misbehaving like me and my fellow 5th grade classmates were when they misbehaved.  (Both sides!  I copied the page on airplanes because it had a lot of pictures.)  The minimal punishment would be the loss of the hand that drew the cartoon.  The worst would be the loss of the head that thought up the idea of the cartoon.

This religion is slowly worming its way into our society.  It is using our legal system to stymie their transgressions.  The Fort Hood shooter has not been tried after 5 years.  The Boston bomber just got a trial delay, and wants a change of venue from Boston.  He does not think he will get a fair trial there.

Let me again be clear about one more item.  Once the Muslim religion gains the majority, there will be no other religions tolerated as everyone other than a Muslim will be considered an infidel.    There may be no law other than the Sharia Law, which not only controls public behavior, but it controls private behavior and beliefs.  The religion becomes the government!  There is no separation.

Far more than just the fanatical Muslim 20% that think we live in a demented and corrupted society, they find our dress codes and our over-the-top sensual TV ads appalling.  But this is what they can see of us from the other side of the world on TV.  They see our TV programming.   They also see the media attention given to gays and lesbians.  Such behavior is strictly forbidden in their religion.

Who will be the big losers if America were to fall to the Muslim religion?  Obviously the folks that are LGBTQ.   The biggest group of losers would be women.  In the Muslim religion, they are treated not much better than a cow and not as well as a camel.  Good luck with that.

We will see how this all plays out because one of our Western European allies will eventually be dominated by Muslims.  It may be Belgium or it may be France.  Their loyalty is not to the country in which they are residing, it is to their religion.  Whereas most Americans think national, the Muslim religion operates more on a tribal basis.  Remember the comment about, ‘separation of church and state?’  In the Muslim religion, the religion is the state!

Kurt Westergaard was strongly criticized by immigrant communities in Denmark regarding his cartoon.  Westergaard stated, “Many of the immigrants who came to Denmark, they had nothing.  We gave them everything – money, apartments, their own schools, free university, health care.  In return, we asked one thing – respect for democratic values, including free speech.  Do they agree?  This is my simple test.”

This test will get considerably more serious than a ‘pass, fail’ test.

What Flavor of Islam Do You Like?

Do you remember the Baskin Robbins ice cream stores?

I can still remember the jingle:

Look for the sign of the big 31;

It’s Baskin Robbins, where ice cream’s fun!

I particularly liked both the watermelon and the peaches and cream flavors.  Sometimes I would get a scoop of each on the same cone.  Yummy!   Their principle attraction was that they had many wonderful, off-the-wall flavors.   I have not been to a Baskin Robbins ice cream store for years, so I am not sure how they are performing amongst the plethora of ice cream and yogurt shops in today’s economy.

As a part of my continuing effort to educate myself and to educate the three or four people that read my blog, I have decided to learn something about the Islamic religion.  After all, they are now in the news constantly.  How can you miss the beheadings of two journalists?  News has just been released about the execution of over 700 Iraqi soldiers by ISIS in the month of June.  We now have word of a second Minnesotan killed while fighting for Islamic terrorists.

How many flavors of the Islamic religion do we have and what is it in the Muslim religion that promotes widespread terrorism and killing?

The number of Islamic religious sects changes as frequently as the tide.  According to one source, there are 78.  According to the prophet Muhammad, himself, there is 74.  Another source says there are over 150 branches of the Islamic religion.

Be that as it may, the two principle sects are the Sunnis and the Shia (Shiites.)  The Sunnis make up approximately 75-90% of the world’s Muslim population.  The Shia are estimated at 10-20% of the world’s Muslim population.  The discrepancy of those statistics should indicate the inexactness of these estimates.

The majority of Muslims live in Asia and Africa.  Approximately 62% of the world’s Muslims live in Asia, with over 683 million adherents in Indonesia, Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.  Approximately 57 countries are Muslim-majority, and Arabs account for around 20% of all Muslims worldwide.  Twenty-three percent of the world’s population, or 1.57 billion people, are Muslim, making it the second largest religion in the world.

The division between Shia and Sunni dates back to the death of their Prophet Muhammad, and the question of who was to take over the leadership of the Muslim nation.  Sunni Muslims agree with the position taken by many of the Prophet’s companions that the new leader should be elected from among those capable of the job.  This is what was done, and Muhammad’s close friend and adviser, Abu Bakr, became the first Caliph of the Islamic nation.

On the other hand, some Muslims share the belief that leadership should have stayed within Muhammad’s own family, among those specifically appointed by him, or among Imams appointed by God himself.  This is the Shia belief, and they believe that the successor to Muhammad should have been his cousin/son-in-law.

Shia Muslims believe that the Imam’s authority is infallible and it comes directly from God.  Sunni Muslims counter that there is no basis in Islam for a hereditary privileged class of spiritual leaders.  Therefore, they contend that leadership of the community is not a birthright, but a trust that is earned and which may be given or taken away by the people themselves.

Over the centuries, there were many wars fought over who should rule the Muslim empire.  The Sunnis had their Caliphs, and the Shia had their Imams.  As time passed, smaller minority sects were formed as offshoots to a particularly popular Caliph or Imam.

As an outsider looking in at the Muslim religion, I am intrigued by the similarities to Christianity.  The Islamic ‘bible’ is the Quran.  The Quran is viewed by Muslims as the final revelation and literal word of God.  Muslims believe that the verses of the Quran were revealed to Muhammad by God through the archangel Gabriel on many occasions before his death.  It is divided into 114 chapters and contains 6,236 verses.  Muhammad’s followers copied the verses as received while Muhammad was alive.   The Quran mentions the names of numerous figures considered prophets in Islam, including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus.  Of course, us Christians are familiar with all of these men.  Mohammad is considered the last Muslim prophet.

So much for the similarities; now we get to the differences.  Whereas most Christians reside in democratic countries that have judicial law systems tracing their roots to Roman origins, the Muslims believe in Sharia law.  Sharia law is the law of Islam.  The Sharia law is cast from the actions and words of Muhammad, which are called ‘Sunnah,” and the Quran, which he authored.  The Sharia law itself cannot be altered.  As a legal system, the Sharia law covers a very wide range of topics.  While other legal codes deal primarily with public behavior, Sharia law covers public behavior, private behavior and private beliefs.  Of all legal systems in the world today, Islam’s Sharia law is the most intrusive and strict, especially against women.

According to Sharia law:

Theft is punishable by amputation of the right hand.

Criticizing or denying any part of the Quran is punishable by death.

Criticizing or denying that Muhammad is a prophet is punishable by death.

Criticizing or denying Allah, the Moon-God of Islam, is punishable by death.

A Muslim who becomes a non-Muslim is punishable by death.

A non-Muslim who leads a Muslim away from Islam is punishable by death.

A non-Muslim man who marries a Muslim woman is punishable by death.

A man can marry an infant girl and consummate the marriage when she is 9 years old.

Girls’ clitoris should be cut (per Muhammad’s words in Book 41, Kitab Al-Adab, Hadith 5251.)

A woman can have one husband, but a man can have up to 4 wives.

A man can unilaterally divorce his wife but a woman needs her husband’s consent to divorce.

A man can beat his wife for insubordination.

Testimonies of four male witnesses are required to prove rape against a woman.

A woman who has been raped cannot testify in court against her rapist(s).

A female heir inherits half of what a male heir inherits.

A woman cannot drive a car, as it leads to upheaval.

A woman cannot speak alone to a man who is not her husband or relative.

Meat to be eaten must come from animals that have been sacrificed to Allah.

Muslims should engage in Taglyya and lie to non-Muslims to advance Islam.

The list goes on………………..

Talk about chauvinistic!  During the 60s and 70s, when women were burning their bras and accusing men of being chauvinistic pigs, they had no idea they were going against sharia law, the preferred law of 23% of the world’s population!  After reading some of the tenants of Sharia law, doesn’t it make you wonder why any woman raised in a western civilization as a Christian would want to marry a Muslim?  It perplexes me, but it is done all the time.  One example is the young wife of the Boston marathon bomber.  (It is estimated that over 90% of Iraqi citizens would prefer Sharia law over the democracy established by the US!)

One can only hope that not all the Muslims in the world take each and every tenant of Sharia law literally.  After all, look what happens when the Bible is taken literally.  When I was younger and my head was full of mush and my body had raging hormones, my favorite excuse for my actions was that, “I haven’t done anything that is not in the Bible.”  Everything is in the Bible!  Murder, sacrifices, war, adultery – you name it, and it is there.

But our laws are only as good (or bad) as our leaders.  In the Muslim world, it would be their religious leaders.  Need an example of bad Christian leaders?  Remember that little dust-up during the Middle Ages called the Crusades?  Yep.  A few popes called on all ‘believers‘ to eliminate the non-believing Muslims in the Holy Lands.  Jerusalem needed to be liberated!  There were actually over ten major and minor Crusades over a 200 year period.  The home team (Muslims) eventually won the match.

So here we are, about 800 years after the last Crusade, and now we have various Muslim groups warring, pillaging, raping and murdering with impunity.  What gives with that?

Here is my theory on this whole mess.  Religion may be the gun, but money is the bullet.  Yup.  Grandpa T thinks all of this religious hocus-pocus has money and wealth at its core.  No doubt there are some religious zealots involved, but the latest group of terrorists are too well-organized and too well-funded to be a groundswell Islamic movement.  The participants are professionals, not ordinary people off the street.  (The Crusaders brought back boatloads of loot, and they shared it with the Catholic Church!)

We need to find out who is doing the funding.  Then we need to act.  It often appears that our nation is afraid to admit who is actually funding these different terrorist groups because we indirectly funded them ourselves with petro-dollars.  Did you pick up on that tenant from Sharia law that you can lie to advance the Islamic religion?  Could this be taken to the national level?  Hmmm.

We need to find out who is doing the recruiting.  Again, we need to act.  Unfortunately, too many of these recruits are coming from the US, England and other western nations.  It is estimated that close to two hundred Muslim Somalis from Minnesota are currently fighting for one of these terrorist groups.  Many of these people were born in the US!  England is estimating that up to two thousand of their citizens are currently fighting with terrorists.

If the primary motivation of these acts of terrorism was not money, why would the Muslims be killing other Muslims?  The terrorists don’t seem to be taking the time to differentiate as to what brand of Muslim they are killing.  They just seem to be killing.   The killing of Christians serves both to get publicity and garner more financial and recruiting support.  It also draws the support of disaffected westerners, who have never had a cause or been a part of a team.  Thus, they have decided it would be adventurous to sample this flavor – i.e.  join Team Terrorist!

England is going to invalidate passports of English citizens believed to be fighting with terrorist organizations.  The US needs to do the same.  Additionally, we need to punish these people with the use of  a military tribunal.  After all, if a US citizen decides to fight with our enemy, they have declared war on their home country!  No ACLU.  No lengthy, public civil trial.  Only the swift justice of a military tribunal.  (Which brings up the question, why has Nidal Malik Hasan not been brought to trial for the November 9, 2009, Fort Hood shooting in which 13 people were killed?)

After researching this blog, I will tell you that the Muslim religion is complicated to understand.  Their flavors don’t appeal to this retired veteran of the U.S. Army.  Recognizing greed is much easier than attempting to comprehend the Muslim religion.
